The Shell briar series, or the most classic finish in the world: Black sandblasted, was introduced by Alfred Dunhill during 1917.
When England was still at war and the First World War was not yet over. For some, the introduction of this finish was due precisely to the war effort in fact sandblasting was a process that made the pipe less ruinable by scratches and bad weather. This reasoning is important and profound because a pipe is not just a pipe and history, it is our history, of our fathers of our (now) great-great-grandparents.
