Trinidad Cigars
Trinidad cigars are one of the most exclusive cigar brands that exist on the market today, even compared to other Cuban cigar brands. As a brand that was created solely for diplomatic gifting, it was not available to the public until 1998, despite being established in 1969. Even then, it was released in limited quantities, and as a result, continues to maintain a loyal and niche following.
Trinidad currently operates under Habanos SA, and is a luxury brand that comes with a hefty price tag. This brand is not to be confused with Trinidad y Cia, which is a non-Cuban cigar brand.
History of Trinidad
Trinidad is named after a beautiful 16th-century city, La Santisima Trinidad (The Holy Trinity), which is on Cuba’s south coast. Like Cohiba, it was originally created to only be gifted to foreign diplomats. Even the first public mention of the cigar only appeared in Cigar Aficionado in 1992, at which time it was described as “Cuba’s best-kept secret.”
As a cigar meant to represent the best of the best in Cuba, Trinidad utilised only the most premium tobacco from the Vuelta Abajo region and were rolled at the famed El Laguito Factory in Havana. At the time, only 2,000 Trinidad cigars were created each month. They were presented in plain, cedar boxes containing 100 cigars each, never to appear on the shelves of any stores.
However, growing demand for Trinidad cigars, as well as their exclusivity, meant they were extremely sought after. One of the first times that Trinidad cigars were sold was at a dinner hosted by Cigar Aficionado editor and publisher, Marvin R. Shanken, in 1994. During this dinner, Trinidad cigars were handed out and auctioned off, some at $700 per piece.
Bringing Trinidad Cigars to Market
Though the original “Diplomatic Trinidads” never made it into cigar stores, Trinidad did launch publicly in 1998 with one size, their Fundadores. These were long and skinny cigars, measuring 7 ½ by 40 (slightly fatter than the previous versions) that included Trinidad’s signature pigtail caps.
Subsequently, Trinidad launched four more sizes: the Reyes, the Coloniales and the Robusto Extra in 2003, and the Robusto T in 2009. These were all parejos with straight sides, and all came with pigtail caps. In 2012 and 2014, Cuba continued to make changes to their collection, cutting the two Robusto sizes, and adding in their Vigia size, which immediately took a spot on Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of 2015 list.
To celebrate the brand’s 50th anniversary in 2019, Trinidad added a few more sizes to the brand, including the Esmeralda, Topes and Media Luna. They also launched the first cigar in the brand’s history to be without a pigtail cap – the Trinidad 50 Aniversario, which is extremely limited and sold only in humidors, each containing 50 cigars.
Trinidad Cuban Cigars
Trinidad Cuban Cigars are easily identifiable by their trademark pigtail cap, excepting the 50 Aniversario launched in 2019. They are known for having exceptionally developed and aromatic flavour profiles that can only come out of expertly blended Vuelta Abajo leaves. All of their cigars are “Totalmente a Mano Tripa Larga”, which means they are hand-made with full length tobacco leaves from the premium fields in Vuelta Abajo.
Though they were originally rolled at the famed El Laguito factory along with Cohiba cigars, the production of Trinidad cigars was eventually moved to Pinar del Rio City in order to meet demand.
