Partagas: One of the Oldest Cuban Cigar Brands
Partagas is one of the oldest Cuban cigar brands that exists today and is well-known for its history and place within Cuban’s cigar industry. Don Jaime Partagas established his factory, “La Flor de Tabacas de Partagas” in 1945 in Havana, Cuba. He built this majestic factory as a symbol of his brand, and this later became one of the most famous cigar factories in Cuba.
As an early innovator, Don Jaime owned some of the best plantations in the Vuelta Abajo region and is said to be the first to hire lectors to read to cigar rollers during the workday — now an age-old and celebrated tradition. He was influential within the cigar world, having been credited with finding new fermentation and aging techniques that produced better quality products.
After Don Jaime was murdered, his son took over the business and sold the brand to Cifuentes, Fernandes y Cia. Partagas continued to grow under the Cifuentes family, which went on to acquire other well-known brands like Bolivar and La Gloria Cubana. By 1958, international sales of Partagas cigars was only second to the H. Upmann company, accounting for almost a quarter of Cuban cigar exports.
Despite the seizure of the company by the Cuban government, the Partagas brand remains one of the most celebrated cigar brands in the world. In the late 1990’s, Partagas was second in sales only to Montecristo, with annual sales of approximately 10 million cigars.
Where are Partagas cigars made?
Originally named by Don Jaime Partagas as “La Flor de Tabacas de Partagas”, the old Partagas factory in Havana was renamed “Francisco Perez Genman” and was responsible for most of the brand’s cigars until 2012. This landmark factory is now a top tourist destination for cigar smokers around the world. A new factory currently produces most of the brand’s vitolas, which are all hand-made, along with two machine-made cigarillos.
What do Cuban Partagas Cigars taste like?
As one of the oldest Cuban cigar brands, Partagas cigars are not only legendary in story, but have the deep taste to match its history. Utilising a rich blend of Cuban tobaccos from the Vuelta Abajo region, Partagas cigars typically come with robust, spicy and peppery flavours with leathery notes. Two of the brand’s most popular cigars, the double-corona sized Lusitania and the robusto-sized Serie D No. 4, are known for imparting full-bodied flavours that create a lasting impression.
The Serie D No. 4 from Partagas is one of the most famous and sought-after cigars to ever be produced in Cuba. With tobacco that has been aged for a minimum of three years, this cigar comes with robust and powerful flavours that is indicative of the Partagas brand.
The Lusitania from Partagas is a double-corona that is a mainstay in the humidors of most well-known cigar aficionados and comes with consistently high ratings. This cigar is known for its distinctively balanced smoke with a spicy and nutty character.
